MICHAEL JARVIS
Michael Jarvis is an English artist currently residing in Portland, Oregon. Michael trained at the Gage Academy of Art, Seattle, University of Cambridge, England, and University of California at Davis, where he received his PhD.
Michael is heavily influenced by the classical realism period of 17th century Italian and Dutch painting. For example, typical of the Dutch 17th century Still-Life genre, 'Always in the Cards' leads you on a journey. Our starting point is a card depicting the 1930's painting 'City Life' by American artist Thomas Hart Benton showing a typical flirtatious scene during a night on the town. I then give you my version of where this may all lead. The couple's clothes strewn over the corner. A bottle of wine half finished in the early hours of the morning. A cup, the sign of unity, balanced precariously and ready to fall.
